UPSC Announces IES Exam Details

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the details for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), commonly known as the IES exam. This exam is a gateway for engineering graduates aspiring to work with prestigious government organizations in India.

The IES exam recruits engineers for various services, including:

  • Indian Railway Engineering Service
  • Indian Public Works Department
  • Central Water Engineering Services
  • Military Engineering Services
  • And many more.

These roles involve planning, designing, and managing crucial infrastructure projects across the nation.

Exam Stages:

The IES exam will be conducted in three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination: This stage is a filter, consisting of objective-type questions.
  2. Main Examination: Candidates who clear the preliminary stage will appear for the main examination, which consists of conventional (descriptive) papers.
  3. Personality Test/Interview: The final stage assesses candidates' personality, communication skills, and suitability for engineering professions.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Be a citizen of India.
  • Have attained 21 years of age and must not have attained the age of 30 years on January 1st of the year of the examination.
  • Possess a degree in engineering from a recognized university.

Exam Pattern:

The IES exam pattern is as follows:

  • Preliminary Examination:
    • Paper 1: General Studies and Engineering Aptitude
    • Paper 2: Engineering Discipline-Specific (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunications)
  • Main Examination:
    • Paper 1: Engineering Discipline-Specific
    • Paper 2: Engineering Discipline-Specific

Important Dates:

  • Notification Release: 18th September 2024
  • Application Closing Date: 22nd November 2024
  • Preliminary Exam Date: 8th June 2025
  • Mains Exam Date: 10th August 2025
