PM Modi Visits Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Pays Homage to Chola Dynasty's Grandeur

GANGAIKONDA CHOLAPURAM, Tamil Nadu – In a significant gesture celebrating India's rich cultural heritage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple complex on Sunday. He paid homage to the architectural brilliance and maritime legacy of the Chola dynasty, particularly its iconic emperor, Rajendra Chola I.

The Prime Minister, dressed in traditional attire, spent over an hour at the UNESCO World Heritage site. He offered prayers at the Brihadisvara Temple and was seen keenly observing the intricate carvings and monolithic Nandi. Officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) briefed him on the temple's history and ongoing conservation efforts.

In a series of posts on social media platform X, PM Modi shared his experience, calling the temple a "beacon of India's ancient architectural genius and spiritual energy."

"The genius of Rajendra Chola is etched into every stone of this magnificent temple. The Cholas were not just great builders; they were visionary administrators and masters of the seas. Their legacy of cultural pride, innovation, and maritime strength inspires our vision of a strong and self-reliant India," the Prime Minister wrote.

During his visit, the Prime Minister announced a ₹200-crore comprehensive development plan for the Gangaikonda Cholapuram heritage site. The plan includes the development of a world-class interpretation centre, enhanced tourist amenities, and the use of modern technology for the preservation of the temple's structures.

"Our mantra of 'Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi' (Development and Heritage) finds true meaning here. We are committed to preserving our glorious past for future generations while building a modern future," he added.

The visit is seen by political analysts as a major outreach to Tamil Nadu, emphasizing the Central Government's focus on celebrating and preserving the state's unique and profound history. It underscores the cultural significance of the Chola empire in the broader narrative of Indian history and aims to boost international and domestic tourism to this magnificent site.
