Badminton Star PV Sindhu Offers 'Bonam' at Hyderabad's Lal Darwaza Temple for Bonalu Festival
HYDERABAD, India – Two-time Olympic medallist and badminton superstar PV Sindhu was seen participating in the traditional Bonalu festivities in Hyderabad on Sunday. Dressed in elegant traditional attire, the ace shuttler carried the sacred 'Bonam' on her head and offered it to the goddess at the historic Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple in Lal Darwaza, Old City.
Her annual visit drew large crowds of devotees and fans, who gathered to catch a glimpse of the sports icon taking part in the vibrant state festival of Telangana. Despite the heavy rush, Sindhu, accompanied by her family, navigated through the crowd to fulfill her vow.
The Bonalu festival is a thanksgiving ritual to Goddess Mahakali for the fulfillment of vows and for protecting the people from disease. The 'Bonam', a decorated pot containing cooked rice with milk and jaggery, is a sacred offering.
Speaking briefly to the media after her darshan, Sindhu shared her reverence for the tradition.
"Seeking the blessings of Goddess Mahankali during Bonalu is a tradition I hold very close to my heart," she said. "I come here every year. I prayed for the health and happiness of my family and everyone in the country. These blessings give me immense strength for the challenges ahead on the court."
Sindhu's consistent participation in the festival is often lauded as an inspiration for the youth to stay connected to their cultural roots, despite achieving global fame. Her presence seamlessly blends the world of elite international sport with the deep-rooted traditions of her hometown.
The temple committee welcomed the badminton star and facilitated her darshan amidst the festive fervor that has gripped the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
