BHOPAL, India – The infamous Aishbagh Overbridge in Bhopal, which recently became a viral sensation due to its perplexing 90-degree L-shaped turn, is now slated for a significant redesign. Following widespread public criticism, an influx of internet memes, and serious safety concerns raised by experts and locals, authorities have decided to modify the controversial structure to ensure smoother and safer traffic flow.

The 648-meter long and 8.5-meter wide railway overbridge, built at a cost of ₹18 crore, was intended to ease traffic congestion in the Aishbagh area. However, its near 90-degree turn right after an ascent baffled motorists and drew sharp criticism for its design flaw. Officials had initially defended the unusual alignment, citing land constraints and the presence of a nearby metro station as reasons for the distinctive curve.

Visuals of the bridge quickly spread across social media platforms, with users jokingly calling it an "engineering marvel" or a "statue of confusion," while also highlighting the inherent dangers. Commuters and local residents voiced fears of potential accidents, particularly at high or moderate speeds.

In response to the mounting pressure, authorities have confirmed that the bridge will be redesigned. The Public Works Department (PWD) plans to expand the turn by three feet, creating a more rounded and gradual curve. The Indian Railways has reportedly agreed to provide additional land to facilitate this modification. The redesign aims to dismantle the existing railing at the sharp turn and increase the bridge's width, thereby significantly easing vehicle movement and improving overall safety.

This decision marks a crucial step towards addressing the design shortcomings and ensuring the infrastructure serves its intended purpose effectively, moving beyond the viral notoriety it had gained. Officials expect construction for the modifications to commence soon after the land transfer is completed.
