CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu, India – In a significant initiative to ensure access to clean and safe drinking water for all citizens, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin today inaugurated 50 state-of-the-art free water vending machines across various high-footfall locations in Chennai. The launch ceremony took place near the Marina Beach swimming pool, marking a major step in the city's urban development and public health efforts.

These 50 "Water ATMs," as they are popularly known, have been strategically installed in public places such as bus stands, parks, temples, and markets across 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation, including areas like Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, and Adyar. Each machine is connected to a Metro Water pipeline and a storage tank, ensuring a continuous supply of purified water.

The machines are designed to dispense 150 ml and 1-litre quantities of drinking water at no cost, primarily benefiting daily-wage workers, commuters, and the underprivileged who often struggle to access affordable clean water. Officials stated that the units are equipped with purification systems, CCTV cameras for round-the-clock monitoring, and IoT (Internet of Things) technology to alert the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) about low water levels for timely refills.

"This project underscores our government's commitment to inclusive development and public welfare," stated Chief Minister Stalin during the inauguration. "Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental right, and these machines will provide a crucial public utility, especially during the peak summer season."

The initiative is part of a broader plan to expand the network of public drinking water access points across the city, aiming to reduce reliance on bottled water and promote sustainable practices. CMWSSB officials have assured rigorous monitoring and maintenance to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the project.
