Dubai School Grows 1 Lakh Kg of Produce in Just 50 Sq Meters
GEMS Our Own Indian School (OIS) in Dubai has accomplished a remarkable milestone by converting just 50 square meters of space into a fully functional urban farm, producing over 100,000 kilograms (1 lakh kg) of fruits and vegetables annually.
The project — known as the "Green School" initiative — was launched in 2015 and has since expanded to include rooftops, vertical walls, and compact spaces to grow around 150 varieties of fruits and vegetables.
-
Combines multiple farming techniques, including:
- Organic farming
- Hydroponics
- Aquaponics
- Aeroponics
-
Uses recycled materials to create sustainable, space-efficient systems
-
Promotes eco-friendly practices in an urban school environment
"A powerful example of how education and sustainability can work hand in hand"
This initiative is not just about food production — it’s fully embedded into the school’s curriculum. From kindergarten through higher secondary, students actively participate in the growing process, learning about:
- Environmental responsibility
- Climate-smart agriculture
- Food systems and innovation
Notably, Grade 11 students developed a mobile app that allows parents and teachers to order fresh produce directly from the school farm. The proceeds fund future sustainability projects, creating a self-sustaining green ecosystem.
Despite its small size, the farm has delivered:
- Massive annual yield: 1 lakh kg of produce
- Student empowerment through STEM and environmental education
- A scalable model for urban agriculture in schools worldwide
As the world looks for innovative food solutions in limited spaces, this initiative by OIS stands out as a blueprint for sustainable education and climate action.
